MEET MARK MAIO
Mark Maio brings more than 35 years of experience and innovation to the field of ophthalmic imaging. With a rare blend of technical expertise, academic leadership, and creative vision, he has helped shape the way diagnostic images are captured, interpreted, and taught across the globe.
Mark holds a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Photography, a Master of Arts in Humanities, and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography and Communication Design. This unique combination of scientific rigor and artistic insight has fueled his dedication to advancing ophthalmic imaging through both education and innovation.
Mark’s academic contributions are equally notable. He served as Director of Ophthalmic Photography at Emory University and Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at SUNY Buffalo, where he established the only Bachelor of Science degree program in ophthalmic photography. Mark has served the Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society as President, on the Boards of Education, Certification and Directors in addition to being the Chairman of many of their educational programs. In recognition of his impact on the field, Mark received the Outstanding Contribution to Ophthalmic Photography Award from the Ophthalmic Photographers’ Society in 2012.
Mark has been an invited speaker on ophthalmic imaging at meetings around the world. His expertise ranges from retinal to slit lamp imaging and examination, which he is considered a leading expert. With extensive clinical experience participating in clinical trial imaging, developing clinical trial imaging protocols, working with researchers and Clinical Research Organizations in the early stages of trial protocols, he has worked with pharma to develop, implement, train, install and monitor numerous clinical trials throughout his career.
Mark’s professional journey includes leadership roles such as Director of Diagnostic Sales and Marketing at Haag-Streit USA, Director of Strategic Technology for ORBIS International’s Flying Eye Hospital, and Director of Science and Technology at Ophthalmic Imaging Systems (OIS). In 1999, he developed the first high-resolution retinal digital imaging system in ophthalmology, pioneering a new era of digital diagnostics.
At the heart of Mark’s work is a belief that technology, when deeply understood, becomes a powerful tool for improving patient care and preserving sight. His commitment to education continues to inspire the next generation of ophthalmic imagers around the world.
