Course Information

Description:
This course prepares ophthalmic technicians to support glaucoma patients through testing, the patient work up clear, confident, patient-friendly communication. It focuses on the technician's role in the glaucoma patient ‘s experience — scheduling, intake, chairside support, and follow-up conversations — and does not cover diagnosis, disease management, surgical technique, or pharmacologic treatment, all of which remain within the physician's scope of practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

•     Discuss glaucoma testing and the workup components which apply to glaucoma patients.

•     Use lay-friendly language to answer general terminology questions without straying into clinical explanation.

•     Distinguish between information technicians can share and information that must be referred to the ophthalmologist.

•     Apply a simple framework (Acknowledge → Redirect → Reassure) to respond to common patient questions.

•     Practice active listening and the teach-back method to confirm patient understanding of physician instructions.
